How to Make DIY Pumpkin Candles for Fall

October 2, 2025

Fall is the perfect season to get crafty, and nothing says autumn like the warm, cozy glow of pumpkin candles. With a simple wax kit from Amazon and a few extra supplies, you can create beautiful pumpkin candles right at home. Here’s how to do it step by step!

What You’ll Need

  • Pumpkin(s): Small sugar pumpkins or mini pumpkins work best
  • Amazon Wax Kit: Includes soy wax flakes & wicks
  • Fragrance Oil: Pumpkin spice or cinnamon scents are ideal
  • Double Boiler: Or a microwave-safe bowl
  • Spoon or Ladle
  • Knife and Spoon (for prepping pumpkins)
  • Decorative Objects: Optional, I added leaves to mine
  • Matches: I just love the look of these long matches in a glass dish

Step 1: Prep the Pumpkins

  1. Cut the Top Off: Use a sharp knife to carefully slice off the top of each pumpkin, just like you would when carving a jack-o-lantern.
  2. Scoop Out the Seeds: Use a spoon to remove the seeds and pulp, scraping the interior until it’s clean and smooth.
  3. Dry the Inside: Pat the inside with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

Step 2: Melt the Wax

  1. Measure the Wax: Estimate how much wax you’ll need by filling your pumpkin with water, then pouring the water into a measuring cup.
  2. Melt the Wax: Follow the instructions on your Amazon wax kit. Typically, you’ll heat the wax in a double boiler or in short bursts in the microwave, stirring often.
  3. Add Fragrance and Color: Once melted, stir in your chosen fragrance oil and any coloring, if desired.

Step 3: Insert the Wick

  1. Position the Wick: Use the wick stickers (usually included in your kit) to secure the wick to the bottom center of the pumpkin.
  2. Stabilize the Wick: Rest a chopstick or pencil across the top of the pumpkin to keep the wick upright.

Step 4: Pour the Wax

  1. Pour Carefully: Slowly pour the melted wax into the pumpkin, leaving a bit of space at the top.
  2. Let It Set: Allow the candle to cool and harden completely, which may take several hours.

Step 5: Trim the Wick and Enjoy!

  1. Trim: Cut the wick down to about 1/4 inch above the wax.
  2. Light and Enjoy: Your DIY pumpkin candle is ready to bring a festive glow and delicious scent to your home!

Tips for Success:

  • Place your pumpkin candle on a heat-safe plate in case of leakage.
  • Try different pumpkins and fragrances for variety.
  • These make wonderful homemade gifts!
