DIY Homework Station

September 2, 2025

I’m currently gearing up for back-to-school season and was in need of extra workspace for the kids to use for homework.

I had this old dining table and decided to transform it into two functional desks.

Follow along to see how I repurposed this space and made it perfect for studying or working.

Not only is this a great way to recycle furniture, but it also helps you create a personalized and cozy workspace for the school year ahead.

Happy building!

What You’ll Need:

Step 1: Assess Your Dining Table

Start by inspecting your old dining table. You want to ensure that the base is still sturdy and the table’s surface is even.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Tabletop

Decide how wide and long you want each desk to be. A typical desk is about 30 inches in height, and the width can range from 40-60 inches depending on your needs.

  • Measure the length of the dining table to ensure you can divide it into two equal parts (or adjust if you prefer different desk sizes).
  • Mark the center of the table and measure out equal lengths for each desk.
  • Use a saw to carefully cut the table into two equal pieces.

Step 3: Measure and Fix the Desks to the Wall

Use your drill and the extra wood to fix your new desks to the space you’ve chosen for them. Make sure to measure the space first.

Step 4: Decorate Your New Desks

To complete your workspace transformation, decorate the desks with functional accessories like chic chairs, desk lamps, and picture frames. Adding small personal touches will make your new desks feel uniquely yours.

Get creative with your desk layout, and don’t forget to add some fun back to school supplies to make your workspace feel inviting.

Best of luck with the school year ahead!
